![]() Miri Segal: BRB, 2007 Together with my assistant, Iris Domany, I went on a journey to the new continent of Second Life (SL). We arrived without ever leaving the studio. A documentary film of 30 minutes brings forth elements from our joint travel. In the new world lies a promise of a fresh start, you can fly there, create and rejuvenate. The space there generates a different psychogeographic perception. A new form of intimacy is created; one can love at a click of a button. In this realm, an immediate projection is formed and followed by amplification of emotions. But inevitably one discovers that the grip of first life won’t let go. The film opens with a conversation shown on a black screen, the conversation was recorded at a philosophers gathering place in SL. There is a girl who tries to disclose some of her personal problems. The philosophers, however, try to generalise from her words and extract a universal meaning, and tension rises. At the end of this conversation we see the gathering place of the philosophers around a campfire at night time. The journey begins from here, passing through various places we arrived at, sometimes by chance, by using the game's search engine. For instance, when searching for “love” we arrived at a public orgies space, where Iris met a young guy and had sex with him, while I filmed. The film shifts between those places, the philosophers’ campfire and a virtual gallery I constructed up in the sky of Second Life, capturing the conversations as they took place, in this purgatory, between heaven and earth. BRB is an acronym for “be right back” in chat language. Miri Segal, April 2007 |
