 VALIE EXPORT: Asemie, performance 1973 “The body is a territory of it’s own, a territory for society /…/ for the private sphere as well as the public sphere” VALIE EXPORT I samband med utställningen av VALIE EXPORTs verk på Index presenterar Hedwig Saxenhuber en föreläsning som ger en bredare inblick i konstnärskapet med fokus på performance. Sedan mitten av 60-talet har VALIE EXPORT i sin verksamhet som performance-, video-, foto- och mediakonstnär, som filmare och curator och i sina teoretiska arbeten ställt frågor kring representationssystemens inneboende strukturer, genom vilka vårt samhälles verklighet produceras. Hon undersöker dem från en kvinnlig, genderspecifik position. Detta tydliga fokus är en av de aspekter som ger hennes arbete dess särskilda och oavvisliga mediakritiska styrka. Föreläsningen kommer att fokusera på specifika tematiska linjer och deras transformationer i VALIE EXPORTs komplexa konstnärskap – med början i de tidiga aktionerna med grund i konceptuell feminism fram till ett av hennes senaste arbeten, Glottis som presenterades på Venedig biennalen 2007. Följande verk av VALIE EXPORT ingår i föreläsningen: Cutting 1967/68 Documentation about Touch Cinema, 1968 Hauchtext: Liebesgedicht, 1970/73 Asemie or the Inability to express Oneself using facial expression, 1973 Hedwig Saxenhuber är curator och skribent, verksam i Wien. Hon är en av redaktörerna för Springerin Magazine, Wien och driver institutionen Kunstraum Lakeside i Klagenfurt. Hon var curator för en retrospektiv med VALIE EXPORT som ingick i Moskvabiennalen 2007. 2008 var hon en av curatorerna för Transformations of History or Parallel Histories, 6th Biennial,GCCA, Gyumri, Armenien, tillsammans med Georg Schöllhammer. Tack till Österrikes ambassad, Stockholm och Iaspis, Stockholm. “The body is a territory of it’s own, a territory for society /…/ for the private sphere as well as the public sphere” VALIE EXPORT In connection to the VALIE EXPORT exhibition at Index, Hedwig Saxenhuber is invited to give a lecture presenting some aspects of VALIE EXPORTs oeuvre, with a focus on the performance works. As a performance, video, photography and media artist, a filmmaker and a curator, as well as in her theoretical work, VALIE EXPORT has since the mid-1960s been asking questions about the constructs inherent in the representational systems through which our societal reality is produced. She investigates them from a female, gender specific viewpoint. This specific focus is one of the aspects that gives her work its special, compelling media critical potency. The lecture will point at specific thematic lines and their transformation in the complex oeuvre of VALIE EXPORT – starting with the early actions from conceptual feminism to one of her latest work, Glottis presented at the Venice Biennale 2007. She is one of the editors for Springerin Magazine, Vienna and curator at Kunstraum Lakeside in Klagenfurt. She curated a major retrospective of VALIE EXPORT's work presented in connection to the 2nd Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Arts, 2007. 2008 she curated Transformations of History or Parallel Histories, 6th Biennial, GCCA, Gyumri, Armenia, together with Georg Schöllhammer.
