 Anri Sala: Intervista, 1998 svensk information inom kort In Intervista Anri Sala uses a biographical narrative, an episode in his mother’s life, to reflect on the collective history of Albania and the situation there today. By coincidence, Sala finds an old reel of film footage. The film is a recording of an Albanian television interview given years ago by Sala’s mother Valdet Sala, then a young woman and spokesperson for the Communist Youth Organisation. The soundtrack is missing and with it, her words. The artist starts out on a journey to find the lost dialogue. With the help of a deaf lip-reader he succeeds in reconstructing his mother’s statements. When Sala confronts her with the subtitled version of the interview, she reacts with mixed feelings. She both confirms and dismisses the content. The ambiguity in the mother’s attitude to the past is also expressed in the formal and narrative structure of the film. Apparent documentary footage is mixed with re-enacted scenes, historical found footage and shots of urban life in Tirana today. Thanks to Galerie Chantal Crousel, Paris. |
