![]() Nanna Debois Buhl: Sneakers In the Sky, 2007 Nanna Debois Buhl works conceptually with film, drawing, photography and sound. Her practice is research-based, borrowing methods from documentary, literature and historiography. In her recent projects she has focused on how national and individual identities are constructed through narratives and the writing of history. The installation "Sneakers in the Sky" explores an urban phenomenon found in many American cities. Shoes are seen hanging in power cables, trees and light poles. The shoes appear as signs in urban space, but what do the sneakers signify and how may the “hanging sneakers” be read and understood? The phenomenon is examined through photography and sound recordings. Related to forensic material, the 81 photos represent an archive of the hanging shoes. The material for the project was collected in Brooklyn, New York and the project investigates the readings spanning from transitional rites, marking of territory, drug sales, to mere kids play. |
