The Nervous Magic Lantern is strikingly low tech and could have come about centuries ago. A lightweight propeller (I use styrofoam) turns and rhythmically interrupts a flow of light. (Think of bright sunlight pouring in through a small opening into a dark space and sending an inverted image of the outside onto cave walls. Unknowing creatures are scared out of their wits but one enterprising fellow holds his hand over the opening, says he has an in with superior forces and charges admission to see the miracle, inventing religion, cinema, and capitalism all in one brilliant stroke). A lens focuses this light on a reflective screen. I place and manipulate things behind the lens, reshaping screen imagery while light comes pulsing from the screen with a remarkable effect on the brain. An illusion of vast depth is produced and things seem to advance while remaining in place. Eternalisms I flippantly call them, and they're like nothing we see in life. (No actual magic is used at any time.) Rorschaching does the rest.
Clever, very clever, so why the baleful mood?
Great greater greatest. An even more splendid depression than the 1930's? Without Joan Blondell and Jimmy Cagney? Hardly. And with a likely outcome of nuclear war as the Chinese eventually say no to America's paper dollars in exchange for their actual commodities (see michael-hudson.com). This presentation of Nervous Magic Lantern phenomena is burdened with awareness of what's happening around us and to us. It seems just our luck, we vanquishers of Evil, that selfishness and greed are not so good, may Ayn Rand rot in her grave. (Capitalism, the original Cain and Abel arrangement, featuring wars that can go nowhere but do pay off for some corporations.) Now who needs an art that's less than exaltation? I intend my next performance piece to entirely go with the moment of performance and to be entirely elating. Humanity has to clear out sometime, better of course in another eon or two and not in ten years more or less and by our own hands, some of them. Better, that is, if science and reason and common decency were to prevail starting now.
