 Alex Villar: Underground, poster 1997-98 Performance without a spectacle. The image "Underground" is part of a project called "Other spaces", which consists of a series of performative interventions in outdoor urban spaces. In the specific context of the artist's hometown of New York City, a place where so-called public spaces are thoroughly administered, there are still many spaces that are not completely subject to control. Some are temporary and circumstantial and others are the result of prolonged decay. The artist has been focusing on small, body-scaled, negative architectural spaces, by positioning his body in situations where the codes that regulate everyday activity can be made explicit. The body is made to conform to the limitations of claustrophobic spaces, thereby accentuating arbitrary boundaries and possibly subverting them. A sense of absurdity permeates the work, counter posing irrational behaviour to the instrumental logic of the city's design. |
